About this program:

This program presents mature pieces, which were composed near the end of the composer’s life.

The sonata by Francis Poulenc was commissioned by the famous clarinetist Benny Goodman, who intended to premiere it with Poulenc himself playing the piano. Yet, Poulenc died suddenly from a heart attack on January 30th 1963, before the piece was published. It was premiered a couple of months later by Benny Goodman and Leonard Bernstein in the Carnegie Hall.

The sonata by Camille Saint-Saens was part of a project the composer took on himself during the last year of his life. He intended to write a sonata to each of the woodwind instruments and started off with the oboe sonata op. 166, followed by the clarinet sonata and the bassoon sonata. He died before completing his plans, which included a flute sonata and sonata for english-horn.

The clarinet sonatas by Johannes Brahms, although composed several years before his passing, were the last chamber pieces Brahms composed. Around 1890 Brahms intended to retire from composing. He thought to merely complete some of his unfinished works when an inspiring encounter with clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld changed his mind. Brahms finally composed four pieces featuring the clarinet: trio op. 114, quintet op. 115 and the two sonatas op. 120.
